Day 13: Throw more grenades!
Zara closed her eyes and removed her helmet. She could no longer stand the static of the radio. Her eardrums met the stale air of the volcanic fields of Venus. It was filled with whispers.
She shook her head and tried to chase away the absurd words that were creeping into her skull.
"This one was tough." Jayden's synthetic voice brought her back to reality. "What did you wish for?"
"Answers. So..." She opened her eyelids, and the bluish magma attacked her retinas. "It offered me even more riddles."
The gigantic corpse of the Ahamkara surrounded them, coiled up on them like a cat. It had the body of a lion, and the face of a woman. Zara did not understand the meaning of this form. Many things eluded her on that day.
"We should get out of here." The Titan seemed to sniff the air. "This place makes me uncomfortable."
"Wait a moment. Can you hear them?"
"What?"
" The whispers."
"Yes. We shouldn't listen to them."
"You're right." Zara clenched her fist. Her Sunbracers were glowing along her arms. "They must be silenced."
Two wings of fire sprang from the Warlock's back as she soared towards the sky. One solar grenade fell on the Ahamkara, then another, and then another. Jayden hurried away and gazed at the blaze that devoured the creature's body.
The flames rose into the dark firmament. Suddenly, the chimera's face came to life again, and its mouth twisted into a slow, excruciating howl of agony. Jayden blinked. The face was motionless.
Alone in the skies, Zara made the Light rain. The fur burned, the flesh evaporated, spreading a smell of moldy paper. The leather of the beast opened like a book and thousands of pages flew away, swirling truths and lies around the Warlock.
She screamed to cover the whispers. Her body turned into a nova, and the words disappeared in a swirl of ashes. Further down, the Ahamkara was nothing more than a pile of bones.
It wasn't enough. More grenades followed. Zara's hands burned her. The insects came out of their burrows, surprised that the sun rose so early, and were incinerated.
A grenade. Another grenade. She didn't know where she got this strength from.
"Disappear!" She put all her willpower into one last throw.
The bones cracked, then shattered. As the remains slowly consumed themselves on the volcanic rock, Zara let herself slide to the ground. Her limbs were painful. The fire was throwing sparks into the air, wandering like fireflies before getting lost in the darkness.
Suddenly, Jayden grabbed her firmly by the shoulders and turned her over towards him. A mask of anger deformed his face.
"What the hell was that? What did you wish for?"
"I..." Zara blinked. The crackling of the fire was quieting the whispers. "I wanted to see it gone."
"We can safely call that a success. I've never seen anything like it."
Jayden released her and folded his arms. "He showed you something, didn't he? And it made you angry."
"I don't remember," admitted the Warlock. "It was like a dream..."
"Whatever it was, it's over now. "The Titan hesitated. Zara read doubt in his eyes. He didn't believe her.
"Let's go home," he said in a calmer voice, "and forget this story."
"I'm right behind you, boss."
